A 2002 Olympia recap

Ronnie takes the fifth... just!

Mr. O report by Peter McGough

Once again, Joe Weider's Mr. Olympia contest proved to be the most exciting bodybuilding show on Earth. Defending champ Ronnie Coleman came into the event as odds-on favourite to win his fifth Sandow statuette, but in the end it was a close-run competition. At 250 pounds, the Texas Titan was a full 15 pounds lighter than at his 2001 victory (in that contest, he just squeaked by Jay Cutler). Although Coleman was duly placed first in both the symmetry and muscularity rounds at this rendition, in rounds three (posing) and four (posedown) he trailed second to revitalised Kevin Levrone. The twosome battled down to the wire, but the 244 pound Levrone's late charge wasn't enough to usurp the crown. For the fourth time in his career, Levrone had to settle for runner-up spot at the Mr. Olympia.

Prior to the contest, many pundits had written off Levrone as finished, but once again he came back with the heart of a warrior. He was not the only surprise, though. The biggest - literally - revelation of the whole event came in the shape of 300-pound Günter Schlierkamp. The recipient of a special invite, the German's best Olympia showing to date had been 12th in 1998, so nothing earth-shattering was expected from the man whose smile could light up Ohio. By the culmination of the contest, Schlierkamp had much to smile about, as he and his revamped physique - greater upper-body width and detail - stormed into the fifth spot. In fact, in the evening rounds, he was marked third. He became the solid crowd favourite and received a standing ovation the likes of which have seldom been seen at an Olympia.
